8 Ways to Find A Balance Between Being Satisfied With the Present and Achieving your Goals

It is important to find the right balance between ambition and happiness. Having too much ambition makes life miserable and having too little makes life feel meaningless.


If you find yourself constantly chasing new dreams without fully enjoying the present or you are extremely successful when it comes to career and finances, but you are struggling with relationships, health or feeling fulfilled - some balance may need to be created. The same goes for if you are lacking direction, clear goals or purpose.


8 ways to find this balance between being happy and fulfilled in the present and achieving success and goals are:


1. Stop linking success to happiness

Instead of thinking you will be successful when you reach your goal or target, shift the balance. Science indicates it is actually the opposite. Being happy first and foremost increases your chances of success, so learning to enjoy the journey of reaching success and setting this intention is key.


2. Have Dreams to Strive for

It is still important to have dreams and passions to strive for so you feel fulfilled as these allow you to make an impact on the world. Don't be afraid to dream big and aim high - although make sure these are realistic, create a plan alongside them and always take action.


3. Look at Life as a Wheel

Keep all areas of life equal and important, shift the balance and diversify your identity to include a focus on health, hobbies, friends, politics, personal interests as well as work and success.


4. Pick your friends wisely

It can sometimes feel complicated to get this balance right as we are constantly being told to dream big and competition seems high. Make sure you choose to surround yourself with people who are not just thinking about status and who have a good balance of priorities.



Once you realise this and you stop comparing yourself to others, a lot of pressure can be lifted which can help you feel better in the present and enjoy the journey. Remember in the end there is nothing you have to do - it is your life. It is good to be motivated but sometimes taking the pressure off is helpful.


6. Set Intentions and processes instead of Goals

Intentions have no end date and involve the process of work itself - not the specific outcome. The feeling of satisfaction can be quick once you reach a goal and then you strive for your next goal and this cycle is never ending. Growth is great, but enjoy the process of reaching the goal and not the outcome of the goal, which is usually intrinsic.


7. Practice Gratitude

Gratitude it really powerful in shifting your mind to look at what you have now and how far you have come. It helps you to enjoy the journey and eases pressure. Remember active contentment is growth and celebrate small successes.


8. Live in the present

Get your mind into the present through practices like yoga, breathing, meditation and downtime. Find time for the stuff you enjoy and feels good without thinking into whether it is helping you to reach your goals.


It is important to have dreams and purpose - just don't chase goals, set realistic goals and enjoy the process.
