5 Ways To Help Eliminate Negative Patterns In Your Life

Updated: May 16, 2023

Beautiful sea

Everything we do in life is a a results of a subconscious, learned pattern and thought process - which turns into a behaviour. Most of these are positive, helpful and loving and we do not need to try and change them. However we sometimes learn unhelpful, wrong and negative patterns that form blocks in our lives and stop us from living a life we truly deserve, desire and enjoy.

The good news is, every single pattern can be changed, undone and updated in our minds. They can be changed to create helpful thought processes, beliefs and truths - which then turn into actions and behaviours. This takes skill, time and patience and I hope my 5 ways to help eliminate negative patterns may point you in the right direction. It is always best to work with an expert on this where possible.

1. accept that any pattern can be broken

Realise and accept that patterns and beliefs are very scientific as they are based upon brain pathways which can be changed and broken. This takes the power and fear away from the negativity and the feeling of having no control over the issue and you can look at the issue in a solution-focussed, logical way.

2. try and get to the root cause of what has caused the pattern

This takes a lot of self awareness and curiosity but it is the most effective way of dealing with the issue on a long term basis. Usually these patterns are formed through childhood, as our child brain perceives things in a way which is not always correct or logical. When we go back as our adult self and look at these patterns we can be more rational and change our mind's narrative to expose the truth and provide helpful, loving alternatives.

3. become self aware

Being open minded, self aware and curious is so important so we are able to spot the patterns that need to be changed in ourselves and take feedback from others. Nobody is perfect and once we accept we are flawed however it is always possible to change, real action can take place.

4. Take responsibility for our actions

Although patterns start in our mind it is our actions that form our reality. We always have control over our actions - even in our subconscious mind tells us different. It can be challenging, but it is also possible if that is the only option in the short term. For example if someone is a cigarette smoker, it is their responsibility to take the daily action to stop smoking as well as try to uncover the reasons behind them smoking to deal with the root cause of the issue.

5. take responsibility for making change happen and our lives in general

We may have picked up unhelpful, wrong patterns in childhood which may not have been our fault and this is unfortunate. However now, especially with the knowledge that the patterns can be changed, we need to take ownership and responsibility and put the effort in to correct these patterns and take control of our lives in general and the aspects not working for us.
